Dominican Republic - Bateyes

Building on work supported by FRB since 2005, this program supports Haitian immigrants and their descendants living in former sugar cane work camps (bateyes) who have historically been among the poorest and most discriminated against of those living in the Dominican Republic. Their situation is improving with new skills in crop management, soil preparation, community seed banks, and horticultural production. Revolving loans, efficient marketing and organizing committees help communities to access basics such as water and education for their children - privileges which are the most difficult for these marginalized populations to access.
