Advocacy in Serbia

In April 2013, CWS hosted a delegation of CWS staff and volunteers from the US who came to visit CWS programs in Serbia and Georgia. In the Serbia-Smederevo program, they witnessed the joint program of CWS, Red Cross Smederevo and Foods Resource Bank providing food assistance and ensuring food security, they toured several pre-schools that provide secure place to young socially vulnerable children, visited the safe house for victims of domestic violence and talked to Smederevo local government officials and CWS local partners.

The delegation saw firsthand the entire system, the process of meal preparation in the soup kitchen using meat and vegetables grown on the local land, visited the kids attending the pre-school program in the House of the Red Cross in Mala Krsna where children enjoy healthy meals as well as kids in the pre-school Pcelica who just planted fresh and healthy vegetables in their new Eco Garden. The pre-school director, secretary of the Red Cross, CWS staff and community members were happy to present joint programs and exchange ideas with visitors about ideas and future initiatives.

The delegation praised the joint program that affords access to healthy food to food-insecure and poor households and allows them to send their children to pre-school and have a healthy start in life through the provision of nutritious foods and complementary services. The delegation also emphasized the importance of further lobbying for and promoting these programs, making a pledge that they will carry the word to their constituencies to ensure the continued support for these and similar initiatives.
