Today, Friday August 23, 2013, is Bev Abma's last day with Foods Resource Bank. Please hold her in your thoughts and prayers as she begins a new phase in her life.

If you've ever been carried across a river on the back of a nice young Bolivian man, you might be Bev Abma.

If you make it a rule NEVER to ask what it is you’re eating, you might be Bev Abma.

If you've ever accepted a live chicken as a thank-you gift on your way out of an African village, you might be Bev Abma.

As we approach retirement, we often wonder have we made a difference or would life be the same if we had not passed through it.

Learning Meetings Inspire Greater Care for Neighbors in Uganda

Recently, a guest participant at a learning meeting FRB hosted in June 2013 in Uganda shared the following with FRB staff:

"Our church has a ministry for women living with HIV AIDS in which we helped decrease stigma and help them openly declare their status. This has encouraged other people in the community to go for testing and counseling, starting retroviral drugs and living in positive lifestyles for their own safety.

EthnoArts in Laos

One of FRB's members, World Renew/CRWRC, shared this video with us. Learning Through Doing

Three FRB work learning groups recently returned from Guatemala and Nicaragua. These intergenerational groups went deeper in our learning about FRB as we spent more time in each local community than happens in a regular FRB visit. We supported people in work they were doing for their own communities.

Working and Learning with FRB

This past February I traveled to Nebaj, Guatemala on a Work-Learning trip with Foods Resource Bank (FRB). Our project in Guatemala was to work hand-in-hand with members of a small village to construct a greenhouse. The hope was to provide greater food and nutritional security to these mountain villagers throughout the year. FRB’s main goal on their Work-Learning trips, however, is to give motivation, support, and solidarity to the people in poverty who receive FRB funds. So, while we were there to build a greenhouse, more importantly we were there to build relationships. And that was the part of the trip that I will remember the most.

Learning from an Overseas Visitor

I had the pleasure of attending a recent growing project harvest celebration with a representative of one of our programs in Malawi. Nancy Kimani Hinga, program consultant for CRWRC/World Renew, is in North America now on a deputation visit. She’s a deeply spiritual, friendly and gracious person, and an excellent speaker. She reported to attendees on the impact FRB’s Malawi-Nkhoma program has had on the women who participate in it.
