Our 2012 in Review: A report from the Byron Center, MI Growing Project

With a damaging early spring frost and the summer drought, 2012 was, for FRB, a year of uncertainty. There was concern that the level of support for global partners might be less than in the past because of possible shortfalls from hard-hit growing project communities in the U.S.  However, the Scriptures reminded us in Galatians 6: 9, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Our growing project in Byron Center MI may not have had an “earth shaking” beginning this year, but we did have an earth moving one. With the permission of our sponsoring church, Friendship CRC, our committee began a major improvement of our growing project hay field behind the church. The large drain field was leveled, and the excess sand will be hauled away. We also tiled some of the wet areas, which will now add much more useable land for raising the hay we sell each year to support FRB. Our thanks goes out to all who have been faithfully furnishing the equipment, barn, and energy to keep this phase of our growing project going. Our thanks also go to those participating in our field improvement project.

2012 ended with a wonderful demonstration of support from our Friendship church. We were highly encouraged during the year by many evidences of answered prayer. We believe that our children’s use of their “prayer plants” in early spring, and the fervent petitions during a very dry summer were reasons for a harvest that was larger than we ever expected. Even with the year’s dismal beginning we still had a “harvest” beyond any in the Byron Center growing project’s recent history. How grateful we are for all these reminders that our God is always faithful. The activities in our growing project that produced hay, soybeans, beef, and a goat combined with our church offerings and individual gifts will be used in the Laos-Xieng Khouang agricultural improvement program led by World Renew.

Isn’t it exciting to see the work of the Lord in such real ways? Wouldn’t you like to be a part of the “harvest” for 2013?  Take a look at the rest of the FRB website or speak to FRB to see ways the Lord can use you and your gifts to improve the lives of others. Each of you needs to know how important your contribution was to the success of 2012 and how very grateful we and FRB are for your support. To all of you, our co-workers and supporters in this ministry, we say thank you.
