11 Churches participate in the “Seeds of Hope” Growing Project

One million people have been helped to become food secure in the first 15 years of existence of Foods Resource Bank.  FRB is the parent organization of the local growing project, Seeds of Hope.  A goal has been set to reach another 1 million persons in the next 7 years.

This year the local growing project has been supporting a program in Nicaragua that helps farmers gain legal ownership to land and then train the women and men to manage the compacted and over-grazed land.  Preventing soil erosion, managing disease and insects, and promoting new crop varieties are possible with funds from FRB.

Last week sixteen volunteers from the 10 local participating churches in Strawberry Point, Manchester, Ryan and camp Ewalu met to pool earnings from some 102 acres of the 2015 crops of beans and corn.  $30,000 was specified for the Nicaragua project with $3,479 donated to each of the following ecumenical organizations to implement projects in other parts of the world:  Lutheran World Relief, Catholic Relief Services, United Methodist Committee on Relief and FRB operating funds.  A total of $43,916 will be used to help farmers in developing countries to feed their families and educate their children.

Based on contributions in the last 15 years and the number of persons who have been made food secure, the Foods Resource Bank has determined that investing $55 in one person in a developing country will allow that person to be FOOD SECURE FOR LIFE.

The Seeds of Hope growing project of Strawberry Point, Manchester and Ryan has contributed $431,466 to the programs of FRB since 2004.
