Background on FRB's Myanmar-Chin program: FRB program is working in this remote area with 5,000 households that don't have food security. The goal is to increase harvesting and storage of maize to help households reduce the losses in stored maize grain and also produce their own quality maize seed. Chin state, in the west of Myanmar, is the country’s poorest state, with high food insecurity and malnutrition. The majority of the households depend on rain-fed agriculture for their livelihoods, with rice and maize as the most important crops. Due to the state’s remoteness, interventions like introduction of higher yielding seeds and fertilizer are not viable short-term solutions to resolve food insecurity. There can be a hunger gap of three months. Catholic Relief Services is the lead supporter of this program.
